Valeria

I've been purposefully avoiding Dante. For almost two days now. He knows why. He's taunting me. Playing me like a pawn on a chessboard.

I'm standing in the middle of my new bedroom, staring out of the window at the landscapes placing new flowers in the already beautiful bed in the courtyard, when Sofia knocks on the door. "Signora Valeria," she says in her thick accent, "Il signor Dante è dovuto partire stamattina per lavoro. Se hai bisogno di qualcosa, devi farmelo sapere."

My heart sinks at the news. Dante left on business early this morning. He won't be back for a few days. What the fuck?

She continues telling me he has allow me free reign of the first and third floors, a small separate gym next to the pool, and the courtyard. "Inoltre si può avere libero accesso solo al terzo e primo piano e al cortile e ad una piccola palestra, ma restando entro i cancelli della residenza."

"Grazie, Miss Sofia." I sigh and she leaves me alone.

Dante left me alone in this mansion. He may have promised me free reign in limited areas, but what's the point of that if I have no purpose here? What exactly did he want besides to drive me insane for murdering his rapist father?

I need to get back to work or I'll be fired. The thought of losing my job that I actually like, my purpose, my independence, is unbearable. Everyone probably thinks I flew out to Italy, but my planned vacation—which I haven't even taken yet—will be over soon. People will wonder and start looking for me. Someone will probably even call the cops. The landlords will evict me from my condo without hesitation and my car will be repossessed.

Suddenly, the door opens again and in walks one of Dante's men. I recognized him from the day we were at the home for sale. He was the one with the briefcase. He must've been some kind of finance person or accountant. Someone who handles the legal work or money for the Argentieri family.

He pauses in the doorway. "You don't know me by name yet, Signora Valeria. You can call me Scottie. I've come to tell you that we've secured the property in the areas you are free to roam," he says, and then places a small black card on the dresser. "And to leave you this. You may order clothes or whatever you need and have it delivered to the address taped on the back of the card." Then he turns to leave.

Before he can take another step, I speak up. "I'm going to lose my job if they don't know where I am," I say, the desperation clear in my voice. "I need a phone to let them know I've been kidnapped by a psychotic mob boss." He laughs but doesn't argue with me. He knows it's true.

"Don't worry about your job, Signora Valeria," he says smoothly. "Dante now owns the entire real estate firm, and I can assure you that your checks will still arrive.
